The words you will use first
- Repository
- A project’s versioned files and history.
- Working tree
- The files on your machine that you open and edit.
- Stage
- Mark file paths for the next commit.
- Commit
- Record staged changes as a local revision.
- Revision
- A recorded snapshot of the repository tree.
- Branch
- A named line of work pointing at its latest revision.
- Remote
- The server-side home of the shared repository.
- Push
- Send local revisions to the shared server.
- Sync
- Bring remote revisions into your local line of work and reconcile changes.
- Clone
- Create a local repository instance from a remote URL.
- Fragment
- A stored piece of file content, identified by its content hash.
- View
- A local filter that chooses which repository paths appear on disk.
Two distinctions that help
Commit versus push: saving a revision locally is different from sharing it with the server.
Ignore versus view: an ignore rule excludes new content from being staged; a view controls which existing repository paths are materialized locally.
